What’s your name and what are you studying?
My name is Jason, and I’m doing a Masters in Accounting and Finance. I did the Microsoft Office Specialist Certification in Excel and am now studying for the Expert level in Excel.
Why did you do MOS?
I felt like when I was writing my CV that with what I was saying, for example ‘advanced level in Excel’ or ‘advanced level in Powerpoint’, there was no certification to prove my actual level. So when I saw MOS, I thought that I should try to do it. And the price of the exam at LSE compared to other places was quite reasonable.
I chose to do Excel because it’s the most relevant for the area of Finance and Accounting. I wanted to see how good I am and learn how to improve my efficiency in Excel. I did the training for around 3-4 hours spread out over a few weeks to prepare for the exam for Specialist level. Now I’m preparing for the exam in Expert level.
How was the training for MOS?
It’s a bit different from what I’m used to doing with studying. With MOS training, you’re doing a practice exam but you can have a clue on how to do things if you get stuck. It’s like a hands-on exam while you’re training; it’s not like a course where you sit there and watch a video or someone shows you. It’s very interactive and you can adjust it according to your own speed. In class sometimes it can feel like you know something already but you still have to listen to it, but for MOS training it’s quite flexible on how you want to train yourself.
How was the exam?
I felt nervous because it’s an exam in the name of it, but it was actually quite relaxed. It’s the questions you’ve done in the training and the practice already; you’re doing it again just without the hints and I felt quite well-prepared.
So what are you doing now?
I’ve moved on to expert level for Excel. It’s all the same, but it’s harder! In the Specialist level, it was a lot of formulas but in the Expert level you need options, properties, macros… That’s quite advanced. I know a bit of it but not everything so I’m going to do more training on that as well.
What have you gained from doing MOS?
It’s really helped me because I’m doing some assignments right now and I used the skills I learned in MOS to do things in Excel. It’s made it a lot easier. Before, if I wanted to do something, I didn’t know how because of my lack of knowledge but now I know how to do it.
Would you recommend MOS?
Definitely, it’s really useful. I use Excel in class and in my assignments, and what I’ve learned doing MOS has really helped me. Before doing MOS, I thought I was quite proficient but now that I’ve done the training there are a lot of things I didn’t know that I can now use. And I’ve already put it on my CV!
