Power Saving in Open Spaces

As part of our commitment to the School’s environmental activities, IMT will be introducing a power saving scheme for PCs in open spaces.

From mid August there will be a phased roll out to PCs in campus computer rooms and open areas (e.g. the Library). The new scheme will:

  • Log users off and power down (sleep) when the computer is idle for 25 minutes (no keyboard or mouse activity)
  • Send the computer to sleep if no user has logged in for more than 10 minutes

At login, you will see a notification if you are using a PC which is part of the power down scheme:

idle message

Before automatic log off, you will always be asked if this can happen (e.g. if you are watching a video, the PC will technically be idle):

automatic log off
